About 250,000 Japanese gathered to wish Emperor Akihito a happy 80th birthday on Monday (December 23) in Tokyo, the Imperial Household Agency said. Members of the Japanese Imperial family including Emperor Akihito's wife Empress Michiko, Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako, Prince Fumihito Akishino, Princess Kiko Akishino and their daughter Princess Mako stepped out on the balcony of the Imperial Palace three times throughout the morning to wave to the visiting well-wishers. "This year we had a very big typhoon hit the area of Oshima. Quite a few people suffered from the storm and flood damage," Emperor Akihito said, referring to October's Typhoon Wipha that killed 17 people and stranded tens of thousands more. He also offered his condolences and said he planned to keep those still recovering in his thoughts and prayers. "I will continue to keep the survivors in my thoughts and prayers and wish for the continued happiness and prosperity of the Japanese people," Emperor Akihito said. Later in the day Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was set to visit the Emperor to offer his birthday greetings in person, along with high-ranking government officials and ambassadors from various nations.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Tokyo as the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy headed off to the Imperial palace to present her credentials to the Emperor Akihito.
President Barack Obama has visited Tokyo's Imperial Palace, where he was greeted by Emperor Akihito. The visit is part of an official tour of Japan, aimed at reinforcing the importance the US places on Asia. Although diplomatic issues are high on his agenda, Mr Obama is also under pressure to perfect his Japanese etiquette. According to the BBC's Mariko Oi, the president was criticised for "bowing too deeply" when he toured Japan in 2009.

Akihito (明仁, born 23 December 1933) is the reigning Emperor of Japan (天皇 tennō) and is married with Empress Michiko (皇后美智子 Kōgō Michiko).
Japan's Emperor Akihito turns 81 on Tuesday. In a news conference held ahead of his birthday, the Emperor expressed his praise for the 3 Japanese-born winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics. They contributed to the development of the blue light-emitting diode, or LED. The Emperor said he believes the blue LED will be used in many fields of society, as LED lightening consumes less power and generates less heat than traditional illumination products. He added he feels very proud of the 3 scholars and wants to express deep respect to them. Asked about his thoughts on war and peace in the nearly 70 years since the end of World War Two, the Emperor said more than 3 million people died in the war. He said it is the duty of people who survived the war not to let their deaths be in vain and to continue efforts to make Japan a better country for people of the generations to come. He said he sincerely hopes Japan, as a stable, peaceful and sound nation, will go along with not only neighboring countries but also with as many as possible around the world.

This was the last New Year's Address that the Emperor made for 2014. There are only 2 times a year that people are allowed into the inner areas of the imperial grounds and get a chance to see the Emperor speak, which are on his birthday, Dec. 23rd, and on January 2nd, when the New Year's Address is given. Pretty interesting!

In the opening seconds of the game, exciting Japan centre Kotaro Matsushima takes on New Zealand Maori fly half Ihaia West on the outside and breaks through and draws the full back Nehe Milner-Skudder to give wing Akihito Yamada a clear run for the line during the match in November 2014 at the Chichibunomiya Stadium in Tokyo. But then Yamada doesn't back himself and pulls up, he may have been caught by the chasers anyway, but why didn't he at least try and go for the line with a clear run? Japan then end up kicking for the corner from penalty and get 0 points.

ARIRANG NEWS 16:00 Very good to have you with us. This is Arirang News. Live from Seoul, I′m Laah Hyun-kyung. Title: Japan′s royal family pressures Abe administration to correctly address history We begin with Japan′s royal family emphasizing the need to uphold the nation′s pacifist constitution. This is not the first time the royal family is making such remarks… and experts say it′s likely to ignite a conflict with the right-wing Cabinet. Arirang News′ Connie Kim has more on this story. Japan′s royal family is ramping up pressure on the administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to uphold the country′s pacifist constitution,... as Abe prepares to release a statement in August marking the 70th anniversary of Japan′s surrender in World War Two. In a press conference this week marking his birthday Crown Prince Naruhito emphasized the need to "look back humbly on the past." "I think that it is important... to correctly pass on the tragic experiences and history Japan pursued from the generation which experienced the war to those without direct knowledge." Prince Naruhito went on to underline the importance of upholding the constitution. His position is in stark contrast to Abe′s, who wants to revise the pacifist constitution and give the country the right to exercise its right to collective self-defense, allowing the Japanese military to aid allies under attack. "After going through a disastrous war, Japan is maintaining peace and prosperity under the constitution." It′s not the first time the Japanese royal family has called for preserving the current constitution. Back in December, Japan′s emperor said the country should not forget about the precious lives that were sacrificed during wartime. : December 2014 "During World War Two, more than three million people died. We shall not put their lives to waste." Analysts say, however, that a conflict is likely, as the right-wing Cabinet, which decided last July to change the interpretation of the constitution,... is unlikely to budge on the issue. The Japanese government plans to finalize items on the agenda for the constitutional revision no later than this fall. Connie Kim, Arirang News. Title: Majority of Japanese public says Abe Statement should retain apology for wartime aggressions: poll And the majority of the Japanese public′s thoughts are with the royal family. A recent poll shows... that they think their government should show remorse for Japan′s wartime atrocities in a statement to be released by the Abe Cabinet this summer. The statement will mark the 70th anniversary of Japan′s surrender in World War Two. A survey conducted by the Sankei Shimbun and Fuji News Network this past weekend shows... that more than 51 percent of the respondents agree... Prime Minister Shinzo Abe′s statement should retain key words of remorse and apology over Japan′s wartime role. Polls recently conducted by other Japanese media outlets
What is Hirohito? A documentary report all about Hirohito for homework/assignment. was the 124th Emperor of Japan according to the traditional order, reigning from December 25, 1926, until his death on January 7, 1989. Although better known outside of Japan by his personal name, in Japan he is now referred to primarily by his posthumous name Emperor Shōwa. The word Shōwa is the name of the era that corresponded with the Emperor's reign, and was made the Emperor's own name upon his death. In Japanese, the reigning Emperor is referred to without a personal name as or . The name Hirohito means "abundant benevolence". Prince William Swaps Royal Notes With Japan Emperor For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/24X7BreakingNEWS Britain's Prince William compared royal notes with Japan's imperial family today in the tradition-laden Imperial Palace that dominates central Tokyo. The young scion of the House of Windsor was welcomed by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko at the entrance of the imposing palace, which is cut off from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo by a large moat. Akihito, whose family claims to be able to trace its imperial ancestry for thousands of years looked frail next to the hearty former helicopter pilot, whose wife, Kate, is due to give birth to the couple's second child in April. Pictures showed William, 32, shaking hands with the 81-year-old emperor, and Japanese media reported he had thanked the royal couple for an invitation that had brought him to Japan for the first time. Speaking at a reception later in the day, William said he was "immensely honoured to have been received by Their Majesties". William, who is also Duke of Cambridge, later met Crown Prince Naruhito at a separate palace for a tea ceremony.
Japan's Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko have welcomed Britain's Prince William for lunch at the Imperial Palace. The Duke of Cambridge is on his first visit to Japan. He last met the emperor and empress 3 years ago, when they visited Britain to mark Queen Elizabeth's 60th year on the throne. The imperial couple welcomed the prince at the entrance of their residence in Tokyo on Friday. The prince thanked them for the invitation. They shook hands, smiled and exchanged words. They are said to have had a friendly talk over lunch for about 90 minutes. Prince William later visited the Crown Prince's Palace. He was greeted by Crown Prince Naruhito at the entrance. Crown Princess Masako reportedly joined them inside for a casual conversation. The meeting was the couple's first with the prince. Prince William is visiting Japan alone. His wife Catherine is due to give birth to the couple's second child in April.

Big News Network 2015-04-09Akihito (明仁?, born 23 December 1933) is the current reigning Emperor (天皇, tennō?) of Japan, the 125th emperor of his line according to Japan's traditional order of succession. He acceded to the throne in 1989.
In Japan, the emperor is never referred to by his given name, but rather is referred to as "His Imperial Majesty the Emperor" which may be shortened to "His Imperial Majesty" (天皇陛下, Tennō Heika?). In writing, the emperor is also referred to formally as "The Reigning Emperor" (今上天皇, kinjō tennō?). The Era of Akihito's reign bears the name "Heisei" (平成), and according to custom he will be renamed "Emperor Heisei" (平成天皇 Heisei tennō; see "posthumous name") by order of the cabinet after his death. At the same time, the name of the next era under his successor will also be established.
Akihito is the eldest son and the fifth child of Emperor Hirohito (the Shōwa Emperor) and Empress Kōjun. Titled Prince Tsugu (継宮, Tsugu-no-miya?) as a child, he was raised and educated by his private tutors and then attended the elementary and secondary departments of the Peers' School (Gakushūin) from 1940 to 1952. Unlike his predecessors in the Imperial Family, he did not receive a commission as an Army officer, at the request of his father, Hirohito.
Barack Hussein Obama II (i/bəˈrɑːk huːˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə/; born August 4, 1961) is the 44th and current President of the United States. He is the first African American to hold the office. In January 2005, Obama was sworn in as a U.S. Senator in the state of Illinois. He would hold this office until November 2008, when he resigned following his victory in the 2008 presidential election.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Obama is a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the president of the Harvard Law Review. He was a community organizer in Chicago before earning his law degree. He worked as a civil rights attorney in Chicago and taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004. He served three terms representing the 13th District in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.
Following an unsuccessful bid against the Democratic incumbent for a seat in the United States House of Representatives in 2000, Obama ran for the United States Senate in 2004. Several events brought him to national attention during the campaign, including his victory in the March 2004 Illinois Democratic primary for the Senate election and his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004. He won election to the U.S. Senate in Illinois in November 2004. His presidential campaign began in February 2007, and after a close campaign in the 2008 Democratic Party presidential primaries against Hillary Rodham Clinton, he won his party's nomination. In the 2008 presidential election, he defeated Republican nominee John McCain, and was inaugurated as president on January 20, 2009. Nine months later, Obama was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In April 2011, he announced that he would be running for re-election in 2012.
Caroline Bouvier Kennedy (born November 27, 1957) is an American author and attorney. She is a member of the influential Kennedy family and the only surviving child of U.S. President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.
At the time of her father's presidency she was a young child; after his assassination in 1963 her family settled in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where she attended school. Kennedy graduated from Radcliffe College and worked at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she met her future husband, exhibit designer Edwin Schlossberg. She went on to receive a J.D. degree from Columbia Law School. Kennedy's professional life has spanned law and politics as well as education and charitable work. She has also acted as a spokesperson for her family's legacy and co-authored two books on civil liberties with Ellen Alderman.
In the 2008 presidential election, Kennedy endorsed Democratic candidate Barack Obama for President early in the primary race; she later stumped for him in Orlando, Indiana, and Ohio, served as co-chair of his Vice Presidential Search Committee, and addressed the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. After Obama's selection of then-Senator Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, Kennedy expressed interest in being appointed to Clinton's vacant Senate seat from New York, but she later withdrew from consideration, citing "personal reasons."
